Discover the relationships between our ethical frameworks and the power of empathy as a tool for building change! This course unpacks contemporary philosophical and practical applications to ethics and ethical conduct (specifically through the lens of social change and sustainability) and explores the visceral and cognitive experience of empathy.

COURSE OUTCOMES

This course covers contemporary philosophical and practical applications of ethics and ethical conduct. Through an exploration into how ethics manifests in our minds – and how it differs between cultures and generations – you'll be able to unravel how you developed your own sense of ethics, and will learn ways in which you can make more informed ethical choices that challenge the status quo. Through this course you'll discover how empathy can be used as a powerful tool for closing ethical gaps and busting through biases that inhibit ethical progress. You'll gain an understanding of what empathy means for human experience and the nuanced implications of empathetic responses to stimuli. You'll learn how empathy plays a critical role in effective design, implementation, and activation, as well as how powerful it is as a force for gaining key insights and understandings. Armed with insights into the physiological and social experiences of empathy, by the end of this course you will be primed to employ empathetic approaches to design through unique methods and tactics.

Dr. Leyla Acaroglu

As an award-winning designer, UNEP Champion of the Earth, social scientist and entrepreneur, Leyla developed the Disruptive Design Method and designs cerebrally activating experiences, gamified toolkits, and unique educational experiences that help people make the status quo obsolete.

Her mainstage TED talk on sustainability has been viewed over a million times, and she leads presentations around the world on activating positive social and environmental change through creative interventions. She is the founder of the UnSchool of Disruptive Design, and two design agencies, Disrupt Design and Eco Innovators. In 2017 she founded a not-for-profit Brain Spa for creative optimists on a farm in the Portuguese countryside.
